The Greenbelt Has A Carbon Sink...It's Called A "Fen"

"...fens figure prominently in nearly all scenarios of CO2-induced global change because they are a major sink for atmospheric carbon."

According to the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Greenbelt contains this crucial fen.  The portion of the Greenbelt that contains the fen is privately-owner property and is not owned by the Catatoga III NHW, nor the CPOA, however, Fitchie Creek flows through the Catatoga III NHW parcels, enters the CPOA parcels, flows through the fen and then exits the other side, to the continuation of the CPOA parcels, making our impact on the fen critical.

Who knew the Greenbelt plays such an important role in carbon emissions, biodiversity, and healthy groundwater!  You can read more about fens here.

EPA Watershed Academy Training

Stewardship begins with us!  The better educated we are on the value and importance of the wetlands in our Greenbelt, the better stewards we will be.  Take time to work through the EPA's Watershed Academy.

It's free, self-paced, and full of information that is applicable to the Greenbelt, which is a part of the Ferson-Ottercreek Watershed.
