Fitchie Creek As A Part of the Otter-Ferson Creek Watershed

Did you know that Fitchie Creek is a part of the larger Otter-Ferson Creek Watershed of Kane County?

Our obligation is to keep the portion of Fitchie Creek that flows through the Greenbelt clear of obstructions and debris and educate our local property owners in our subdivisions to not contaminate the grounds or water with trash, fertilizer, or other refuse.

To read more about Kane County's management plan for the Otter-Ferson Creek Watershed through their brochure for our area.  Click on the brochure image to go to their site.

More Information

The mission of the Fox River Ecosystem Partnership is to promote, preserve, protect and enhance the natural, cultural, economic and recreational resources of the Fox River and its watershed.  The Fox River Ecosystem Partnership (FREP) was formed in 1996 after the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) designated a core of high-quality ecological resources in the northern-most watershed as a "Resource Rich Area". Portions of eleven counties, including Lake, McHenry, Kane, Kendall and LaSalle, form the Fox River watershed, which is home to 11% of the state's population.

The Conservation Foundation began working with the Fox River Ecosystem Partnership (FREP) and Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) in the fall of 2010 to complete a watershed plan for the Ferson-Otter Creek Watershed. The watershed plan provides recommendations to reduce fecal coliform bacteria entering the streams and other water quality protection efforts; implement education and outreach efforts to local stakeholders; incorporate land use best management practices to reduce the volume of stormwater runoff.

EPA Watershed Academy Training

Stewardship begins with us!  The better educated we are on the value and importance of the wetlands in our Greenbelt, the better stewards we will be.  Take time to work through the EPA's Watershed Academy.

It's free, self-paced, and full of information that is applicable to the Greenbelt, which is a part of the Ferson-Ottercreek Watershed.
