Greenbelt & Access Trails

Access trails are maintained by resident volunteers for the purposes of maintaining access into the interior of the land for maintenance.  It is not maintained as a recreational amenity, however, some residents choose to walk the access paths to enjoy the natural environment of the Greenbelt.

Please note:

  1. This is a natural space, intended to be kept in its "natural state", and therefore it does contain thistle, poison ivy, and other such flora.  We do not spray for invasive or poisonous species inside of the Greenbelt or along the trails.
  2. If you choose to enter the Greenbelt, you must stay on the access trails as you may damage or disturb native plants and freshly seeded open areas important to the ongoing preservation of the floodplain and wetlands.
  3. You may encounter wildlife in the Greenbelt including deer, coyote, foxes, owls, turkeys, beavers, and more.  Remember this is a natural space and disturbing wildlife or their nests/habitats is prohibited and may be prohibited by law .  This includes beaver dams on the creek.  These are a naturally occurring phenomenon and are not to be approached.  If private property damage is occurring due to the presence of wildlife in the Greenbelt, this must be reported to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for review. You should not discard, toss, throw, or otherwise obstruct Fitchie Creek including tossing in boulders, tree limbs, brush, or other such items.  This is expressly prohibited by local, state, and federal law and could result in the levying of significant fines by the relevant governing bodies .
  4. If you see any issues, please report them to cat3@catatoga.org.
  5. Follow the "Leave No Trace" philosophy.

Entering the Greenbelt and utilizing the Access Trials is at your own risk and is subject to rules and regulations.
