The Catatoga III NHW Stewardship Committee is comprised of a group of volunteers passionate about maintaining Fitchie Creek, the protected wetlands, and flood plain that make up the Greenbelt and acts as our neighborhood stormwater management system. Throughout 2020 and 2021, we worked directly with Kane County's Department of Environmental & Water Resources along with the Kane County Forest Preserve District to develop a stewardship plan and best practices to be applied to the Greenbelt. The overall goal is to maintain the integrity of the creek and flood plain while keeping the overall costs to the membership low through the use of volunteers wherever possible. A key achievement has been the application for and receipt of an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Permit that will allow the Stewardship team to conduct controlled burns of weeds and brush piles on an as-needed basis. Neighbors immediate to the area will be notified in advance and notices will be posted online and possibly via e-mail. |
Throughout the year, our Stewardship Volunteers pull various compromised trees that are identified as "dead" or that have fallen into the creek creating an obstruction. These trees are then brought to a staging area, cut down into logs, and left in a bin for the community. The wood is not seasoned, but can be used for outdoor fire pits. If you take it and season it for a year, it could be used for firewood indoors. This activity goes on regularly with our Stewardship Volunteers having first priority for any wood broken down. If you see wood in the bins off of Koshare or Hogan Hill...it is yours for the taking. We just ask that you leave some for your neighbors! |
Please note all Stewardship Volunteers must fill out a Volunteer Application and sign and return a Waiver of Liability/Risk of Assumption. All applications must be reviewed and approved and you will be notified of your approval via e-mail or phone. Please note this is a necessary formal review process and is not intended to discourage participation. Volunteers are not permitted to enter the open space parcels and perform work unless under the direction of the Catatoga III NHW Stewardship Committee directors.
We appreciate all of our volunteers!
